From hut to hut
Exploring a biking destination and its trails by riding day tours radially around your accomodation is the typical way people plan their cycling vacation. This is a lot of fun and allows you to cherry-pick the best routes and maximise trail time while enjoying the comfort of a basecamp. We provide a lot of inspiration for such holidays. However, the season highlight for many bikers, is a multiday tour such as a classic transalp… A lot of people trade in the comfort of a hotel or campervan and pack their backpacks to spend long days on the bike and (even longer) nights in dormitories in mountain huts.
The fascination of a multiday tour is different from the stoke you´ll get from riding a trail. Crossing or circling a mountain range means seeing landscapes and climates change and allows for different perspectives on regions of the world. Packing all your necessities in a backpack and staying on mountain huts amplifies the sensation of adventure for many of us. The steady routine of these days changes our perception of time… Wake up early, morning hygiene, packing stuff, breakfast, ride your bike all day, arrive at hut, drink a beer, shower, dinner, go to sleep happily – repeat. The sensation of achievement at the end of such a tour is unmatched!
Today you can find many multiday tours for all likings and levels. Guided or self-guided, shuttle-assisted or “by fair means”, with or without transportation of lugagge, accomodation in huts or hotels…
The multiday tours we have collected here have a strong focus on singletrail riding and therefore require intermediate to expert technical skills on the bike. Altough some uphills can be shuttled we´d also recommend good fitness to enjoy the routes. Most of the tours (e.g. Haute Route, Tour Mont Blanc) allow you to choose/mix accomodation in mountain huts and hotels, depending on the length of your stages. Self-guiding is also often possible, for some routes (Trans Provence) we recommend booking a guide&shuttle to get the most out of it.
