Laax, Baby!

Why you should go there: Flims and Laax, the two villages in the “Surselva” region are one of the oldest biking destinations in Switzerland. Events like the legendary “Trailfox” and trails like the “Runcatrail” layed the foundation for the regions reputation… This mountain region has beautiful lakes, high plateaus, geological landmarks and an excellent mix of purpose built- and shared natural trails.

Who is it for: Bikers and families of all skill levels will find happyness here. There are pumptracks and skill areas, flow- and enduro trails, bus- and cable car shuttles. Swimming lakes, via ferratas or the “swiss grand canyon” offer alternatives for off-days.

Who should avoid it: If you prefer quietness and seclusion you will have to pick very remote spots in the region. Especially around the cable cars, mountain restaurants and the most famous bike trails you will meet many people. The other side of the valley south of the “Rheinschlucht” is quieter and allows exploring less famous trails.

Trails

Laax offers purpose built bike trails of different difficulties. With (small) kids check out the rock resort with its pumptrack and bike playground. (Upper)Nagens- and Runca Trail are not too challenging and good starts into the regions riding and our recomendation for beginners. The Neverend trail requires some more experience on the bike and features obstacles of intermediate difficulty.

In addition, many trails can be ridden on a shared trail basis. These are hiking trails which were lightly adapted for more flow. Such trails have a more natural feel, sometimes the lines are less obvious, often the technical requirement is higher.

All-Mountain and Enduro riders should try Vorabtrail and Crest la Siala, into Nagenstrail and Green Valley.

To reduce potential for conflict the region asks bikers to avoid some highly-frequented hiking trails during peak times (e.g. Nagens and Mutta).
